Description
This piece was inspired by a hike near Delicate Arch outside of Moab, Utah, where the journey itself became more meaningful than the destination. While walking along a narrow sandstone ridge, most of the focus naturally goes toward balance and safety—watching each step carefully. But in one moment of curiosity, I looked off to the side and noticed an entire world I would have otherwise missed.
What I saw was a sprawling wall of layered earth—burnt oranges, rust reds, and soft browns—woven together like a living tapestry. The natural cracks, pockets, and flowing lines in the rock created an abstract landscape that felt both ancient and alive. This piece is my interpretation of that moment: a reminder that beauty often exists just outside our immediate focus.
The artwork is built with layered mixed media, including small stones, orange-toned beads, and textured materials that mimic the rough, uneven surface of desert terrain. Sponges are used to create foliage-like textures, painted in dark greens and blacks to contrast the warmth of the land. The surface is intentionally tactile, inviting the viewer to experience the terrain as much as see it.
Hidden within the piece, in the lower left corner, is a small vial of mustard seeds and a pearl—elements I include in many of my works. These represent faith, drawn from Biblical teachings: the mustard seed as a symbol of even the smallest amount of belief creating great things, and the pearl as something of deep value formed over time. Together, they ground the piece spiritually, connecting the physical landscape to an inner journey.
Moab Wall is about awareness, faith, and perspective—about what we see when we pause long enough to truly look.
