Description
Through the Rocks – Trail Ridge
This landscape was inspired by a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park, along the famous Trail Ridge Road, the high alpine highway that climbs above 11,000 feet and crosses the Continental Divide. At one of the overlooks near the top of the road, visitors can step out of their cars and walk among the rocks that frame a sweeping view of the mountains and valleys below.
The composition recreates that moment of standing between two rocky formations—one group of stones on the left and another on the right—creating a natural window that opens toward a lush green valley and distant blue mountains beneath a wide alpine sky. The painting captures the feeling of looking through this stone frame and seeing the vastness of the Rocky Mountains unfold beyond it.
A subtle spiritual presence is woven into the piece. During the visit that inspired this work, the artist experienced a strong sense of quiet reflection and connection to nature at this elevation. A small angelic figure appears within the scene, symbolizing that feeling of spiritual openness that often arises in the high mountains. A violin is also included, representing the artist’s habit of listening to classical music while traveling through the park and meditating on the landscape. The violin becomes a visual metaphor for harmony—between nature, music, and the inner life of the observer.
Together, the rocks, valley, mountains, and symbolic elements form a meditation on perspective: how a simple opening between stones can reveal an expansive world beyond.
