Description
Badlands is an expressive landscape inspired by the rugged terrain of the American Badlands. The composition focuses on a sweeping hillside rendered in layered color and heavy texture. Rich reds, burnt oranges, and earthy browns flow across the foreground, suggesting the mineral-streaked soils and eroded formations characteristic of the region.
At the center of the piece, a large dark-purple mass dominates the hill. The artist embedded small beads or seed-like materials into the surface, creating a tactile field of texture that resembles scattered stones or mineral deposits across the landscape. This textured section gives the painting a sculptural quality, emphasizing the roughness and complexity of the terrain.
Above the hills, a luminous blue sky is painted with loose, energetic brushwork. The sky’s lighter palette contrasts with the dense, darker textures of the land, giving the scene a sense of openness and atmosphere.
Although it stands as the artist’s only landscape of the Badlands, the piece reflects an exploration of color, texture, and terrain. The combination of painterly brushwork and embedded materials transforms the landscape into both a visual and tactile interpretation of the land.
