Along the Colorado River
William Pilch
Mixed Media with Mustard Seeds and Found Materials

This piece is part of a landscape series William Pilch created after traveling through the canyon country of the American Southwest. While visiting Moab, Utah, Pilch became inspired by the many artists in the area who paint the towering canyon walls and desert landscapes. Wanting to explore the subject in his own way, he began creating textured landscape works based on places he had traveled, including Moab, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the Badlands.

This particular piece was inspired by the dramatic canyon walls along the Colorado River on the scenic highway leading toward Moab. Along this route, the river winds through steep orange cliffs, creating a striking contrast between dark water, desert vegetation, and sunlit rock faces. The artwork reflects that layered landscape: the dark foreground suggests the flowing river, the middle textures evoke brush and vegetation along the banks, and the glowing canyon wall rises behind them.

Pilch incorporated large numbers of mustard seeds into the surface of the work. For the artist, mustard seeds symbolize faith. At the time this piece was created, the seeds represented the belief he had in his artistic path and the faith he was placing in the work he was creating.

Small dog figures also appear within the composition, likely representing Pilch’s dogs at the time, Trigger and Jasmine. Their presence adds a personal layer to the landscape, suggesting companionship and memory tied to the journeys that inspired the piece.

Through layered materials, embedded seeds, and symbolic figures, Along the Colorado River combines landscape, personal history, and spiritual symbolism into a textured interpretation of one of the American West’s most powerful landscapes.
