Description
Boulder Pearl Street is a playful mixed-media cityscape inspired by my time exhibiting art on Pearl Street in Boulder, Colorado. I wanted to create a piece that truly reflected the spirit of the place and one that might even find a home there, so this work focuses entirely on the life, movement, and personality of Pearl Street itself.
The piece was inspired by Fort Collins artist Barbara Moore, whose cityscape work influenced me to explore urban scenes of my own. After creating several cityscapes in Fort Collins, I expanded into other cities, and this Boulder piece grew directly out of that exploration.
The scene is lively and whimsical, populated with small sculptural figures representing people dressed up and moving through the street. The work is created with beads, miniature toys, and tiny signs layered throughout the composition. The trees are filled with hidden details and surprises, with small objects tucked into the branches including a tennis ball, a lizard, a purse, a tiny fork, and other found trinkets. There is a sense that more is hidden than immediately visible, encouraging viewers to slow down and explore the piece closely.
Miniature road signs and kiosks add to the street-level feel, and my signature, William Pilch, appears on one of the kiosks within the scene. Overall, the piece captures the playful, eccentric, and slightly strange character of Boulder, functioning as both a cityscape and a visual scavenger hunt that reflects the creative energy of Pearl Street.
